Vampire Facial or Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

The main role of collagen is to maintain skin elasticity and resilience. However, as we age, we lose our natural ability to replenish collagen by approximately 1-1.5% per year (1). Over time, this gradual decrease becomes more evident with the onset of deeper wrinkles and fine lines.

It is however possible to replenish collagen in a safe, effective and non-invasive manner via a procedure known as PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) or Vampire Facial, offered at our very own medical spa.

Goldberg Medical Spa in Toronto is among the few places where you can have a vampire facial or Platelet Rich Plasma treatment in Toronto. Since 2000, we’ve been dedicated to helping our clients maintain a youthful appearance via safe, non-invasive, and effective treatments requiring minimal downtime. PRP is one of those treatments.

What is a PRP Facial?

A vampire facial is a treatment that combines the power of platelet-rich blood plasma and microneedling. Traditional microneedling treatments involve the use of tiny thin needles to create small insults in the skin. This, in turn, forces the skin to repair itself using new collagen and elastin.

In vampire facial treatments, platelet-rich plasma is introduced. The plasma contains rich growth factors (platelets) known to stimulate skin repair (2). The treatment doesn’t stop at making tiny insults in the skin (as with traditional microneedling) but goes further with injections of platelets on the skin.

Before And After the Vampire Facial

PRP Facial Treatment: Our Process

  1. Initial Consultation

Before you receive a vampire facial from Goldberg Medical Spa, you need to book an initial consultation. We have highly trained and experienced RNs waiting to answer all your questions and perform a personal assessment.

During the initial consultation, we’ll discuss your medical history (i.e., history of blood disease), skin concerns, and goals, as well as an evaluation of our patient’s skin condition to see if they are suitable candidates for the procedure. The initial consultation also involves a detailed explanation of the treatment, its benefits, expected results, potential risks, and related information.

  1. Blood Drawing

If you choose to proceed with treatment after the initial consultation, the next step is drawing blood. PRP is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that uses a patient’s own platelets extracted from their blood sample.

As a result, before treatment is administered, your blood is drawn as it would in a routine blood testing process i.e., with a small needle inserted into your arm to collect a blood sample. The extracted blood is then placed in a centrifuge for approximately 15 minutes to spin it (at very high speeds) to separate platelets from other blood components.

  1. PRP Injections

The rich platelets are then extracted and injected into the treatment area of the skin (deep dermis or other layers i.e., fat layer) to stimulate renewal, thicken the skin and soften creases and wrinkles in the process.

  1. Recovery and Results

After the procedure, you are likely to experience some redness, and/or swelling at the injection sites which are treated. These effects are temporary and bound to subside in a few days. To optimize the healing process, we advise our patients to avoid direct sunlight, and recommend  some skincare products in the short term for healing.

Over the next few weeks, there’ll be visible improvement in your skin tone, skin texture, and overall appearance or glow. It takes approximately 2-6 weeks for the full results of a vampire facial treatment to be seen. By 1.5 months, the rich-platelet plasma injections should have fully stimulated collagen production and skin tissue regeneration.

PRP Therapy for Skin

PRP therapy isn’t just for the face. The treatment is available for the body and can be applied to other parts i.e., the back and neck decollate, which are prone to premature wrinkling among other common skin issues (3). Learn more about PRP therapy for the skin.

Benefits of the Vampire Facial

Looking for reasons to book a vampire facial treatment at Goldberg Medical Spa? Here are the main ones:

  • Effective noninvasive procedure: Platelet-rich plasma treatment is a non-invasive process that naturally increases the production of collagen and elastin in the skin resulting in firmer and tighter skin. This, in turn, reduces wrinkles and fine lines.
  • Improved moisture retention: A vampire facial will also improve moisture retention which attracts other benefits like glowing skin and a lower risk of skin problems.
  • Painless quick procedure: A vampire facial doesn’t hurt. It’s also a quick, safe procedure.
  • Lasting results: Treatment produces lasting results.
  • Skin tone and texture benefits: The treatment will also enhance skin tone and texture.
