A chemical peel is a popular skin treatment, but instead of physically exfoliating like microdermabrasion, it uses a chemical solution to exfoliate the top layers of skin. It helps reveal smoother, fresher, and more even-toned skin .

How it works

A chemical solution (usually made from acids like glycolic, salicylic, lactic, or trichloroacetic acid) is applied to the skin, causing it to exfoliate and eventually gently peel off. The depth of the peel can vary depending on the type used:

Superficial Peels: Light acids (like alpha-hydroxy acids) only affect the outermost layer of skin. No downtime, but you may need a series of treatments.
Medium Peels: Penetrate deeper, reaching the middle layers of skin. These are stronger and often require some recovery time (a few days of redness and peeling).

Deep Peels: Use strong acids (like phenol) and go into the deeper layers of skin. Usually done once, with a longer recovery time.
